Instant Dye Shampoo is an oxidative hair-color formula containing p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) and hydrogen peroxide — effective, but capable of causing serious allergic reactions in some people. This page explains exactly what’s in the bottle, who should never use it, and what to do if something goes wrong, in plain language, before you ever open the cap.
Straightforward safety information, not a footnote
What’s actually in the formula
Instant Dye Shampoo works by depositing oxidative color agents into the hair shaft. Two of those active ingredients — p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) and hydrogen peroxide — are recognized allergens and skin sensitizers. Most people use this product without any issue, but a small percentage of the population can have a genuine allergic reaction, sometimes a serious one, even after using hair dye safely in the past.
Why we publish this separately
The FDA classifies oxidative hair dyes as cosmetics rather than drugs, but that classification comes with specific labeling and caution-statement requirements under the FD&C Act. Google Shopping policy separately requires that any product capable of causing harm carry clear, accessible safety disclosures before purchase — not just on the carton after delivery. This page exists to meet both standards in one place, in plain English.
This policy supplements — it does not replace — the caution statement, ingredient list, and patch-test instructions printed on your Instant Dye Shampoo carton and inside the box. Always follow the physical label first. If anything on this page and your physical label ever appear to conflict, follow the label and contact us so we can correct the discrepancy immediately.
The 24–48 hour patch test
A patch test is not optional, and it is not a one-time step. Because sensitivity to PPD can develop gradually — even in people who have colored their hair safely for years — we ask you to patch test every single time you use Instant Dye Shampoo, exactly as follows.
Mix a small test amount
Prepare a small amount of Instant Dye Shampoo exactly as directed on the carton — do not dilute or alter the formula.
Apply to a small area of skin
Apply a dime-sized amount to an inconspicuous area, such as behind the ear or the inside of the elbow. Do not apply it to your scalp yet.
Leave it undisturbed for 24–48 hours
Do not wash, cover, or touch the test area. Full allergic reactions can take up to two full days to appear.
Check carefully before proceeding
Look for redness, itching, swelling, blistering, burning, or hives. Any reaction, however mild, means you should not use this product on your scalp.
Repeat this test every time
A clear result today does not guarantee a clear result next month. Patch test before every single application, with no exceptions, even for repeat customers.
If you experience any reaction during the patch test: do not proceed with a full application under any circumstances. Rinse the area with cool water, discontinue use of the product entirely, and see the “Adverse Reaction & Emergency Guidance” section further down this page.
PPD and hydrogen peroxide, explained honestly
p-Phenylenediamine (PPD)
PPD is an oxidative color agent used in the vast majority of permanent hair dyes worldwide because it produces long-lasting, true-to-shade color. It is also one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis linked to cosmetics. Reactions can range from mild scalp itching to severe swelling of the face, eyelids, or throat, and in rare cases, a serious whole-body allergic response. People who have previously reacted to “black henna” temporary tattoos are at meaningfully higher risk, due to cross-sensitization.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is the developer that activates the color and lifts the hair’s natural pigment. At the concentrations used in Instant Dye Shampoo it is not intended to be corrosive, but it can still cause skin, eye, and scalp irritation in sensitive individuals, and a burning or stinging sensation is a signal to rinse and stop immediately rather than “wait it out.”
Who should NOT use Instant Dye Shampoo
If any of the following apply to you, do not use this product, and speak with a physician or dermatologist before considering any oxidative hair dye.
You have a known allergy, or have ever had an allergic reaction, to hair dye, PPD, or related “para-dyes.”
Your scalp has cuts, abrasions, sunburn, a rash, or any broken or irritated skin.
You are under 16 years of age.
You are pregnant or nursing — consult your physician before use, out of general caution around cosmetic chemical exposure.
You intend to use this product on eyebrows or eyelashes. This is strictly prohibited and can cause serious eye injury, including blindness.
You have previously reacted to a temporary “black henna” tattoo, which commonly contains high concentrations of PPD.
You have an active scalp condition such as psoriasis, eczema, or open sores, or are using another scalp medication — consult a doctor first.
You have not completed a fresh 24–48 hour patch test for this specific application.
Keeping the formula stable and safe
Temperature & environment
Store upright, tightly capped, in a cool, dry place between 41°F and 77°F (5°C–25°C), away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Hydrogen peroxide can break down faster in heat, reducing effectiveness.
Keep away from children & pets
Store out of reach of children and pets at all times. If this product is accidentally ingested, do not induce vomiting — call Poison Control immediately (see below).
Handling & disposal
Use only as directed; do not mix with any product other than what is specified on the label. Do not transfer to an unlabeled container. Once opened, use within the period indicated by the open-jar (PAO) symbol on the packaging. Dispose of empty containers according to your local municipal guidelines.
Adverse reaction and emergency guidance
Most reactions are mild and resolve quickly once the product is removed. Some are not. Please know the difference, and act accordingly.
How Instant Dye Shampoo is regulated in the United States
Cosmetic, not drug, classification
Instant Dye Shampoo is regulated by the FDA as a cosmetic under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act), not as a drug. Coal-tar hair dyes containing PPD carry a specific, long-standing exemption from FDA color-additive certification (FD&C Act, Section 601(a)), provided the required caution statement and patch-test instructions appear on the label exactly as they do on every Instant Dye Shampoo carton.
Labeling & MoCRA compliance

We display this warning proactively, out of an abundance of caution, because California’s Proposition 65 (the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986) requires clear warnings for products that may expose consumers to any of the hundreds of listed chemicals — a list that commonly touches cosmetic and hair-color formulas. Displaying this warning does not necessarily mean a listed chemical is present above any specific threshold; it means we are giving California customers the notice the law asks us to give, rather than omitting it and hoping it doesn’t apply.
