Why “cosmetic” and “drug” are two different legal categories
Under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act), a cosmetic is a product intended to be applied to the body to cleanse, beautify, or alter appearance, while a drug is a product intended to diagnose, cure, mitigate, treat, or prevent disease, or to affect the structure or function of the body. Instant Dye Shampoo falls squarely into the first category.
A cosmetic hair colorant
Instant Dye Shampoo temporarily changes the visible color of hair. Every claim we make — coverage, application time, wear duration — describes a cosmetic, appearance-based outcome, and every claim is limited to what we can support with our own formulation and testing data.
Not a drug or medical device
We do not claim Instant Dye Shampoo treats, cures, prevents, or reduces the risk of any disease or medical condition, including hair loss, alopecia, scalp disorders, or premature graying itself. We make no claim that it affects hair growth, follicle health, or any bodily structure or function beyond visible hair color.
What each claim on our product page means — and doesn’t mean
Google Shopping policy prohibits unsubstantiated health claims and requires a clear line between cosmetic and medicinal language. Here is exactly what we mean by the claims you’ll see on our site.
“Covers gray hair in 10 minutes”
Describes visible color deposit time in our own product testing. It is a statement about how the dye pigments bind to hair strands — not a claim about stopping, slowing, or reversing the biological process that produces gray hair.
“Lasts up to 4–6 weeks”
An estimate of how long visible color deposit typically remains before it fades with normal washing, based on customer-reported and internal testing ranges. It describes fading of pigment on the hair shaft, not a therapeutic duration of effect on the body.
“Ammonia-free formula”
An accurate ingredient statement: the formula does not contain ammonia. It is not a claim that the product is hypoallergenic, free of all irritants, or gentler in a medical sense — the formula still contains oxidative color agents, described below.
“Suitable for all hair types”
Reflects that the formula is designed to apply and deposit color across hair textures from straight to tightly coiled. It is not a guarantee of a specific shade outcome, which depends on each person’s starting hair color, porosity, and condition.
“Safe for beard use”
Means the same cosmetic formula is designed to be applied to facial hair following the same instructions. It carries the same patch-test recommendation and is not a claim of dermatological safety testing beyond our standard cosmetic formulation review.

Reflect the individual, subjective experiences of real, verified purchasers, consistent with the FTC Endorsement Guides. They are not clinical results, are not guaranteed outcomes, and individual results will vary based on starting hair color and condition.
Why “up to 6 weeks” is a range, not a guarantee
Our FAQ states that color typically lasts 4 to 6 weeks. That figure is not a fixed result for every customer — it moves depending on factors entirely outside the formula itself.
Hair type & texture
Porosity and texture from 1a to 4c hair affect how much pigment the strand absorbs and how evenly color fades over time.
Washing frequency
More frequent shampooing accelerates fading. Customers who wash daily should expect color to fade faster than the upper end of the range.
Starting gray percentage
Hair that is more heavily gray or resistant to color may show visible root regrowth or fading sooner than hair with lighter gray coverage needs.
Maintenance routine
Heat styling, sun exposure, chlorinated or hard water, and other chemical treatments can shorten how long visible color lasts between applications.
How we phrase it going forward: Wherever we state a duration claim on our product page, marketing emails, or ads, we qualify it with language such as “typically” or “up to,” and this page serves as the standing clarification that actual results depend on the factors above rather than on any therapeutic property of the formula.
What’s in the formula, stated without softening
Instant Dye Shampoo is an oxidative color formula. Being ammonia-free does not mean the formula is free of ingredients that can cause a reaction in some people.
Active color agents
The formula’s color change is produced by oxidative agents, including p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) and hydrogen peroxide, alongside supporting developers such as resorcinol and p-aminophenol. These are common, FDA-permitted cosmetic hair-dye ingredients, and some individuals are sensitive to them.
Patch test is not optional advice
We recommend a 24-hour patch test on a small area of skin before every full application, exactly as instructed on the product carton and per FDA cosmetic labeling guidance for coal-tar hair dyes under 21 CFR 740.18. Discontinue use if redness, itching, swelling, or irritation occurs, and consult a physician if a reaction develops.
